Sprayer Advice Needed, Please
Hi folks,
Spotted the first cuke beetle here yesterday, and from the advance reports,
I know the borers will be along any second. I've been using spritzers and
procrastinating on the sprayer purchase, but between the fact that my plants
are getting bigger all the time AND the intensity of the impending assault,
I need to beef up my munitions.
I remember Pumkinguy's advice to get a Solo backpack sprayer, and that's
what I planned to do... but two wrinkles:
1. Solo makes two "rod-actuated" backpack sprayers. One is a piston pump
and gets up to 90 psi. The other is a diaphragm pump and gets up to 60 psi.
However the diaphragm pump is supposed to "pass small abrasive particles",
which I assume would give me better performance with, say kelp or like that,
BUT the local stores only seem to carry the piston pump. Who has experience
with these? Will the piston pump plug up with Sea Mix??
2. This really caught my eye. I know everybody says Solo Backpacks are the
way to go. I don't doubt that they are good. But in Lowe's there was a
battery powered sprayer made by Black and Decker. It comes with a charger
to recharge the batteries and has a capacity of 3 gallons (as opposed to the
Solo's 4 gallons). Also, the B&D battery one is on wheels, rather than a
backpack, but it looks very manageable.
I have about 900 square feet out here. Two plants, after culling. I don't
think I want to invest the $$ on the George Brooks-recommended gas powered
biggie until after one of these darned lottery tickets hits.
Should I track down a Solo with a diaphragm pump?? Try battery power? Or
will the Solo piston do the job?
Advice? Suggestions? Experience to share?
Please help soon - the borers are coming!
Thanks!
Beth
