I agree that for 50 pounds, the nutrient uptake isn't a critical question.
But burying vines does a couple of other things... it gives the plant
stability when it's windy. It also limits access to certain pests. In
California you may not get the big gusty thunderstorms, and you don't have
borers, but do you ever get much wind? Wind can roll vines and really tear
up a plant. I'm not sure if burying would help stymie any California
pests... your local growers could address that question better than I can.
