Kim,
   Sounds like your plant is flat vining. Usually it gets worse ( wider with 
all sorts of weird growth on it. ) sometimes it will straighten out and split 
apart , but not usually....it just gets worse . If it doesn't show signs of 
improvement, break the end of the flat vine right off. In a couple weeks you 
will get some nice side vines to set fruit on.
