Finally Sunshire

Just a quick Manitoba update.  I'll take heat and sunshine any day.  You can shade your plants, mist and water but if you do not get heat and sunshine the plants just will not grow and you can not create heat and sunshine (unless you are really wealthy).

This year started off warm and dry and then quickly proceeded to cold and dry.  I started my plants about 2 weeks ahead of schedule due to the early warm weather buy the cool-cold nights and lack of rain (not to mention germination problems for the first time in 6 years) did not seem to gain me any extra time.

Then June hit.  After an cold start (we are talking several frost in May and even one in June) if finally rained,  and rained , and rained.  Since June 10, I have had 6+ inches of rain and basically no heat or sunshine (average day time high 65 degrees F).  Most of my garden is either drowning or yellow from over watering and lack of sun.

Over the last couple of days the sun has come out and my plants have started to take off, but they are still 2-3 weeks behind last year.  On the bright side, the one day growth on my largest plant (741 Reinsburough 99) was over 1.5 feet so there my be hope yet.

Hoping for continued sunshine and a late frost,

Daniel in Southern Manitoba
