<< Do any of you growers cut the side vine and the Leaf off where the female
bud is if you plan to set fruit wtih that female? I would think the side
vine for sure, i am not sure about the leaf. I will have a female open in a
couple days. Info would be greatly appreciated. >>

More than likely the stem for the adjacent leaf will scar the pumpkin by
scratching it (see picture in Pumpkins2 page 134).This will be a site for
potential infection by fungus,an attraction for bugs and/or a weak spot on
the skin for potential splits. The leaf will also get in the way of taking
the OTT measurements, and daily inspections of the fruit, not to mention you
would like adequate air flow around the fruit during the hazy humid days and
damper nights of late summer and early fall. Adjacent to the fruit is NOT
where you want a leaf to be. You will have many other leaves on the plant and
won't miss one. As a matter of fact,at the end of your first year you will
look at the results and the efforts to get those results and decide that next
year your gonna prune off a few more side vines around the fruit to make
things easier......do away with it now.......GlennA
