 More than likely the stem for the adjacent leaf will scar the pumpkin by 
scratching it (see picture in Pumpkins2 page 134).This will be a site for 
potential infection by fungus,an attraction for bugs and/or a weak spot on 
the skin for potential splits. The leaf will also get in the way of taking 
the OTT measurements,and daily inspections of the fruit,not to mention you 
would like adequate air flow around the fruit during the hazy humid days and 
damper nights of late summer and early fall. Adjacent to the fruit is NOT 
where you want a leaf to be. You will have many other leaves on the plant and 
won't miss one. As a matter of fact,at the end of your first year you will 
look at the results and the efforts to get those results and decide that next 
year your gonna prune off a few more side vines around the fruit to make 
things easier......do away with it now.......GlennA
