I have found the easiest and best shade is made by PVC hoop structures. Pound 
four 2 ft pieces of rebar into the ground around the pumpkin and then slide 
2-10 ft. lengths of small diameter PVC piping over the rebar to form hoops. 
Cover hoops with tarps, sheeting or what have you. Voila. Cheap, instant and 
attractive.
