Brief Washington Update

Hi Pumpkinheads. I pollinated the first fruit of the season this AM. A
nice big 5 lobe female about 9' out on the main vine of my 427-99. I used
two 563 Geerts males as pollinators. These are the first flowers to open in
the patch along with two males on the 427. One of those was a mutant with
both male and female parts to the flower. I've heard of it before but it's
the first time I've seen one. I took a photo, maybe one day I can get it
scanned. I will probably pollinate the first one on the 563 on Friday.
These are exciting times in the old pumpkin patch. We've had some real heat
the past few days with temps in the upper 80's and low 90's, its unusual for
this time of the year in western Washington, but I'll take it. The plants
are two weeks ahead of where they were at this time last year. My third
plant in the patch an 835 McIntyre is a few weeks behind the others. It was
a late started direct seeded backup. I figure if I can set something on it
by the third week of July I'll still do OK with it. Well this is a busy
time in the pumpkin patch and I have to go get some water on it. Later.
