RE: REMOVING VINE BORERS ETC.: Inject nematodes

It is far better to use a syringe to inject insect-parasitic nematodes into
the vine if you are infested with vine borers. This method has worked 100%
for me in the past; the nematodes will move around in the vine cavity until
they find the borer. I have had similar success with ear worms on sweet
corn (inject into the silks).

It is best to first poke a hole with a second syringe, then insert the
syringe with the solution. That way, you don't plug up the syringe with the
solution.

I try to inject about 100,000 nematodes per hole. If you know where the
vine borer entered, you can inject about every 12 inches until you are
certain you have it surrounded.

Typically you will buy nematodes by the millions. Keep track of your
dilution ratios so that you know how many cc's contain 100,000 or so
nematodes. Then inject that number of cc's into each hole you create.

This method is far less destructive than slitting open the vine, and gives
you a good chance to resume healthy growth.

Sources of nematodes include Gardens Alive and Mellinger's. Their catalogs
will give you additional information on using. You can find either source
using a web search engine.

Subject: REMOVING VINE BORERS ETC.

I have read many messages in the past year about removing vine borer larvae
by slitting the pumpkin stem and physically removing them.
What is the technique? How long a slit is made?
How do you physically remove the larvae? Is a hole actually made for
removal? If that portion of the vine bent to provide access? What's a good
method?
Has anyone tried injection of nematodes at the site.
A garden catalogue that sells nematodes suggests they are good for that
purpose.
Is insecticidal soap with pyrethins good for surface
insects on pumpkins? My 3 plants are just starting to lay down a vine. I
have had cucumber beetles shortly after planting. The soap seems to do a
good job in controlling them.
Weather is still spotty with a few hot days and several
cool wet ones. Lots of various bugs munching on everything in sight! Looks
like it will be a challenging summer.
