REMOVING VINE BORERS ETC.

I have read many messages in the past year about removing vine borer larvae
by slitting the pumpkin stem and physically removing them.
What is the technique? How long a slit is made?
How do you physically remove the larvae? Is a hole actually made for
removal? If that portion of the vine bent to provide access? What's a good
method?
Has anyone tried injection of nematodes at the site.
A garden catalogue that sells nematodes suggests they are good for that
purpose.
Is insecticidal soap with pyrethins good for surface
insects on pumpkins? My 3 plants are just starting to lay down a vine. I
have had cucumber beetles shortly after planting. The soap seems to do a
good job in controlling them.
Weather is still spotty with a few hot days and several
cool wet ones. Lots of various bugs munching on everything in sight! Looks
like it will be a challenging summer.
