Tim,
I pollinate all of my early blossoms regardless of how far out they are, but
until last year, I had never had a fruit closer than 10 feet. My 805 last
year was the first female blossom I pollinated on June 24, it was 7 feet out.
The problem I had with it was failing to get an adequate "S" curve in the
vine early on and I fought the shoulders of the fruit rubbing against the
main the whole season. A little farther out from the stump, one might have
some more working room available to get the proper curves established.

List,
I'm curious as to how many 800+ pumpkins were first pollinations on the main
vine no matter what the distance. I generally attempt pollination of
anything on the main but I'm wondering how many heavy-hitters wait 'til they
have a female at say 12' or further. I know several big ones have been
grown closer to the stump but are these exception and not the rule?
