Re: Pumpkins 101
For a good learning experience, take some of your extra
seeds and sprout them in a damp paper towell in a plastic
baggy. Watch how the seeds sprout and develop, the root
comes out first, and grows fairly large before the seed
leaves start developing.
Pre sprouting is also a good way of starting your seeds
anyway. They need a warmer temperature to sprout than they
need to grow, so you can start them slightly earlier than
than waiting untill the soil is warm enough for sprouting.
They're also quicker to establish themselves in MO, at
least that's my experience with other plants such as corn,
I'm only trying this with AGs for the first time this year.
It does help you to get through that worrysome time when
you've planted but are still waiting for that first pair of
seed leaves to pop up, it's a few days shorter this way,
and your planting seeds that you know are viable. Plant
while the sprout is still very small so you don't risk
damaging it. The pre sprouted seeds I used were a little
too far along when I planted, and I had to use extra
caution so I wouldn't hurt them.
