I usually bury my vines as follows.
1. Main vine
I wait till the side vines are atleast 1 foot long. I will make sure the
bottom of the vine is touching dirt ASAP then cover the rest when the side
vines are long enough. I have found that if you do not give the secondaries
enough time to develope they get stunted or don't grow at all.
2 Secondary vines.
I bury them as soon as I can get then to lay on the ground. I make sure
that I prune the side vines off of them so that will not grow later in the
season.
I like to bury the whole vine but some growers cover only the leaf union
witht he vine.
