progress report

Well, summer is here and we have burgers cookin' on the grill and eggs fryin'
on the sidewalk. It has been over 100 degrees most of the last two weeks, and
suspiciously few
rolling blackouts. But that's a subject for another time and place.
Here is what is happening with my plants. I have two going now. Both are from
Chris W.
On May 20th I planted the 520.4 Wilbers and the 337 Wilbers. The 337 is the
more vigorous of the two. It has a dozen or so leaves 19" w x 24" l. The
plant is 22" high and
what I suspect will become the main vine is 2 1/2 " around. Darkest green I
have ever see. Since the 20th I have applied 20-20-20 twice, fish emulsion
once and water soluble
iron once. I have had to spray for white flies already. I used Diazinon,
closely supervised
by my licensed husband of course. No aphids, but then again I won't get them
as long as the Diazinon is in effect. The 520.4 is significantly small than
the 337, but is going strong.
The other seeds I acquired from Alan R (not Alun in England to set the
record straight, although I'm sure he is quite the generous soul and would
have shared had I asked) Out of the 12 seeds he gave me, only one germinated
only to be munched by
RABBITS! It only had it's two baby leaves when it was cruelly murdered. For a
few days
I harboured rabbitcidal fantasies and looked for a way to have the rabbits
sentenced to lethal injection, but I interacted peacefully with my
environment and put up netting and stakes instead. I have one last seed from
Alan, 801 Steltsx835McIntyre and I am trying
to germinate that last one as we speak.
I have a question though. As I read the posts about size and length of
time, i.e. 30 days 100", is that 30 days from life of the plant or 30 days
from fruit set. If it is life of the plant I am in trouble, since at 30 days
from planting, I don't even have a vine, much less
measureable fruit. Any reply would be appreciated.
