Vince-Last year I used a piece of plywood, about 4'X4' but I had to move 
fast; one day my pumpkin was about basketball sized (still small enough to 
pick up though w/out stressing the stem) and within a week I could barely 
move it. Its total weight was only 200 lbs. but that piece of plywood made it 
real easy to slip a hand truck under it to move it out of the garden, to load 
up in the pick-up for weigh-off day. I didn't even need a tarp! Plus it keeps 
the fruit dry underneath from wet soil thus preventing rot. Good Luck!
