List, Raybie seriously needs pruning, but this IS my first year. I HAVE
Langevin's books and Rado's guide, and I am still troubled. Last I saw
him, he was headed mostly northeast, but he's diversifying, branching
out in all directions. I'm scared. What do I do now?

This is normal Kathie.Raybie is growing up and exploring new areas...the
growth now is rapid and its goal is to take over the world. It needs to do
this but it needs guidance too....let it explore, but don't let it get out of
hand. There are some places it shouldn't be allowed to go so we usually cut
off the tertiaries..its tough love now, but in the end it will be appreciated
by all. Allow the secondaries to reach out and explore in an orderly fashion
so you can always go back and take care of problems as they arise. There's
nothing worse than wading through a maze of twisted, injured, or diseased
vines to treat these areas.(this will happen now and again but just remember
not to say"I told you so") Raybie can be allowed to growth full speed ahead
with proper guidance. Some actually remove every other secondary for more
order. As for the direction....well, it will decide where its going mostly,
but a good bamboo stick helps keep them in line. In the end ,Raybie is bound
by the boundaries you give it. There have been great successes with both
methods...sever and orderly pruning, and letting them get huge.(I know of no
successes with allowing tertiaries) Most settle for something in the middle.
Each plant is different and some seem to need more space than others....I
have a small patch so I look for plants with a history of success in small
patches (940Mombert,642snow,etc) . I don't feel I can do some seeds justice
in my patch here (815Checkon,935LLoyd, etc) as these seem to do well with big
plants. They're all different, but your goal is to get Raybie to develope the
biggest fruit while staying healthy all year.A huge plant with all sorts of
problems is not the best case scenario..............G
