More Critters

I hate to keep asking about critters, but your answers have helped.

Today while digging in my garden I unearthed salamanders. From what I read on the internet they eat bugs both good and bad for the garden (including earthworms).  I went ahead and released them back into my garden (many salamanders are protected under the Endangered Species Act), but was wondering if in the future it might be better to move them to the woods before releasing them.  I'm not sure where salamanders stand on the good animal vs. bad animal scale.  Any ideas?
