Keith: My experience is that if the yellow
spots are small, few (3-5) and in the body of the leaf, you have no
worries. My Daletas has the same thing, while my Bobier is clear
green yet they receive the same feeding. In your first year I suggest you
be careful not to over use chemical fertilizer. If you stick with fish
emulsives, kelp extract and compost tea you will be fine. Ever now and
then you can mix in some chemical fertilizer, but avoid the chemicals during
fruit set. If you have a small plot your greater problem may be getting
enough sun directly on the leaves. I have about 10 hours of direct sun a
day this time of year. I allow my vines to grow on the lattice of the back
fence to increase my solar exposure.

Bob and Craig
Its nice to know that southern california
all though maybe not the big hitter area of choice does have some serious
growers, as we do have warm weather and long summers.
Thanks for the great advice , this being my first
year and not fetching the great seeds will be a learing experience as it has
all ready. The hobby is fun , and even though i am in a track home area
with miminal area to work with i did put some real effert into my prep or the
soil and area im using and The dills sent me a half dozen seeds from the
700-900 pound variety. Next year if i have modest success ill attempt to gain
some special seeds. One on my plants have some yellow spots
or blotches on a couple of the leaves.
Do you guys know what thats
from.........?
Thanks again everyone out there in pumkin world

Keith: I concur that mid-May is fine for
planting in Southern California. We don't have to contend with the
short summer season and can still get good growth in early September.
The key will be to make sure your soil temp. stays above 70 degrees which
can be accomplished early in the season with a raised bed or plastic
mulch. Southern Cal. can still have a wide range of micro-climates. I
live In Pacific Palisades and my greatest battle comes from my proximity to
the ocean which can cause mildew. Those in Sierra Madre or La Canada
may have to deal more with mid-day temps in excess of 95 degrees
in late August and September.
Seed selection
is the stuff of which dreams are made. If you are fortunate enough to
purchase a 723 Bobier seed, you have a proven parent of 1,000
pounders. However, the more adventurous might look for
pumpkins with a 723 Bobier as an immediate parent or some of the other
proven performers. Though we don't live in "Giant Pumpkin Alley" we do
have the benefit of mild temperatures, fewer pests or golf ball sized
hail. Lets see who can break the 1,000 lb market from our neck of
the woods.

Keith,
May 17 is just fine for planting in this area. There are a few of
us down this way, Myself and Kevin Smith in Torrance, Doug Parker in
Sierra Madre, and Chris Gregory in La Canada. The closest weigh
off's are Elk Grove on Oct. 5th, ( just south of Sacramento, )
Half Moon Bay, Oct.13th, ( just S.W. of San Fransciso ) and Borchard
Farms Oct. 26th, down the coast from Half Moon Bay.
Feel free to email me privately if you wish.

Hi my name is

about many people from my area, but anyways i am a first year grower in
a rather confined area inspired by a local grower of a 650lb pumkin i
saw at a local nursery and then read about in the paper. Are the
names everybody has for their plants some sort of gene pedegry or family
line ? Or are these nicknames people give their plants. I got my seeds
from the dills in Canada and they just said the weight from which they
came from ..example 808lbs and 730lbs..?Also i believe i started my plants alittle late
planting on 5/17 having sprouts on 5/23 but my 803 plant is growing at
an unbelievable pase with 15" leaves and now just vineing . I love
all these e-mails i get to read and have bought and read the second
growers guide from the Dills prior to my first attempt this
year. Any advise I'd love to here from
anybodyAlso wheres the
nearest weighoff if i ever get a big one to
row....thanks Keith Reh Orange

Jim So
what is your personal best ???? Try and relax this is fun and if you
have a pumpkin question ask it we have all made allot of friends
here on the list and when we meet in person it is like seeing long
lost relatives. There is NO ONE on this list with less time to read
emails than me and I have been ticked off myself as to the amount of
jibber jabber but quickly realized it was MY PROBLEM with what I was
angry with and not my great friends on the list having a wonderful
time sharing there personal experiences and proving that they are
just HUMAN. Honest truth is the REAL MEAT of growing pumpkins can be
found in Don Langevins How to grow World Class Giant Pumpkins 1 and
2, (had to put in a plug for my Buddy) and if you have been on this
list for a while you will realize we have exhausted almost all the
concepts of growing, Everything you could ever imagine about growing
pumpkins is in the archives and all new questions are just
reminders, Take some time and look at the! archives there is a
wealth of knowledge there that you literally could spend the rest of
the year reading. I don't want to get on everyone's bad side BUT
RELAX we have created a beautiful community here and I complement
ALL my friends for adding to this wonderful list.. Take care and
Bash me privately !! I may check my messages next
month!!!!
