Hey, Craig, Like you, I've been gardening since I was 6.  Now I am 60.  My first prizewinning pumpkin in 1949 weighed more than I did at the time, just over 70 pounds.
This is my first year of competive growing.
As for the exploding tips, I wonder if the osmotic pressure in the vines is too great for the plant  to withstand at certain times of rapid growth.  What causes it in some and not others is a mystery. Dave



If they're in rapid growth and they come up against an obstacle whether it be one of their own leaves or a big weed they will snap themselves off from the pressure.  I've had that happen twice to me.
