Re: Correspondence from purgatory
Hello there Dale,
Where in SW Oregon are you at? I'm originally from Grants Pass, but am now
living in Scotland, having been over here for the last year. To tell you the
truth, since the climate is terrible here, I cannot wait to get back to Oregon
this Fall!
About your Gold Finch problem - they are normal visitors to SW Oregon this
time of year, although they should be leaving shortly. They are strictly a
migratory species and only spend part of the year in area.
The best way to solve your problem is to actually feed them. They are
primarily small grain eaters and eating leaves is a sure sign that they are not
able to find much in the way of grass seeds at the moment. So, I would reccomend
actually providing some grain and a standing water source for them as far away
from your garden as possible. Get a good finch or canary mix from one of your
local pet or feed shops and feed them daily on the other side of the
property. You will find that they will leave your garden alone and go after the seed
opposed to green foods. Provided you can keep plenty of grain in front of local
bird life, you will also find that they will start to hunt after insects and
small slugs in your garden and actually work for you opposed to against you.
I hope this is of some help!
Sincerest regards...
Kelley & Andrea
