Glenn,
I know some of the NH 'guys' and what they do is to prune every other
secondary vine off of the main vine. Also, you can terminate the main vine
about 8 to 10 feet after the pumpkin (once the pumpkin gets going and you
know it is going to continue to grow), some growers prune it even closer to
the pumpkin.
I am pruning my plants this year in the classic Christmas Tree pattern, with
every other secondary being taken off.
