I have never placed anything under my pumpkins and never had a problem. The
ground stays fairly dry under my largest pumpkins as I have a 6'x8' or 8'x10'
tarp strapped to 6' posts over the pumpkin to shade them from the sun. The tarp
also helps keep the rain off the pumpkin.
