RE: off the ground?
I use straw as mulch, and it does a great job of keeping the weeds away and
keeping the soil moist. I found that insects were no problem -- whatever I
applied to the plants also got any insects in the mulch. I only mulch as
the vines grow out and after I bury the vines to allow more roots to grow
down. I'll apply granular fertilizer and hoe the weeds in the areas where
the vines are actively growing, then bury the vines and mulch.
I use styrofoam sheathing under the pumpkins. This seems to provide the
smoothest surface to help avoid surface imperfections on the pumpkin. It's
also cushioned.
I rototill in the straw mulch in the fall, and it adds a lot of organic
matter to the soil for the following spring.

Some use sand, some use pieces of styrofoam or other materials...
This leads me to a question, what do you all think of straw? I certainly
have
a lot of it. It probably won't stay wet but it might stay moist....
