Hi Tony
I have heard (again, I don't know this from first hand experience) that
pollen will keep for up to 2 years in the freezer. This is indeed a
rumor, but heck, if its true it means you can pollinate next year's
pumpkins with pollen grown from this year's killer seed that you won in
an auction for $200!... it might be worth the try. Heck, you might even
be able to sell it--HAHAHAHAHAHA!... um, please don't sell pollen.
Selling kind of takes the fun out of pumpkin seed trading (which is
better than baseball card trading)! If you do use year old frozen
pollen, please let us all know how well it works next year! :-D
Also, be cautious about using fertilizers with double digit numbers...
the smaller numbers will feed the plant and reduce the possibility of
growing a fruit so fast that it splits (commonly and affectionately
referred to as "blowing up"). If all you have is double digit ferts,
diluting them more than the instructions say to, and continue to feed
regularly ought to get you where you're going without prematurely ending
your season.
Good luck!
Toby

Hi Toby;
I put in that I was starting to add a fertilizer that had a high
middle number. I am correcting that to a balanced formula......or the
closes I
can get my hands on. While still using fish emulsion and sea weed as a
drench
and foliar.
Finally getting a little sun here. Temp still cooler than
normal.
And ofcourse another question: How long can pollen be kept in the
freezer?? I
can vacuum seal the container if this will hold it longer.
OK, lad.....I'm off to the nursery to get my compost. I go with
my
trailer and buy it bulk. A yard for $35.......
