Re: Twisted Vines and FL info

Steve, I don't like the Captain use on the plants. It will turn into a damp paste that in my opinion, will do more harm than good. The plastic bags will only help keep it damp. If you don't have time to cover, Buy plastic coat hangers and cut them into 3 candy cane hooks. Put them over the lead vine and pin them to the ground. I use them on all vines and move or add more daily. Go ahead and move the twisted vine back into shape. The leaves will follow the sun and straiten out in a few days. Any open slit in the vine U can cover with dirt. It is better to spray with Root Shield from Gardens Alive. Buy it online. Captain is nasty stuff. Throw it out safely. It is not safe to touch.
? For anyone who is wondering how I'm doing in FL. Maybe a few over 600 LBS.now. Great shape on the 1689 Jutras seed.Hard to tell which is the biggest. My 700 lb Fl Record from last year, (grown from the Wallace 1502), may be bigger. Should have a new Squash Record this year for FL. at ?600 LB +?from one I grew last year. (1053Warner SQ. X 756Rodonis SQ.)?I need to measure. Nice shape on a Prudence Island Pumpkin seed (965 Ottone,RI) I like this seed, it has my old 851 CT Record in it! I left 2 on this plant, or it may have been the biggest. Well good luck everyone, my season is almost over here. Thank God!

Subject: Twisted Vines

Hi everyone,
All of my plants have been growing very well here in Connecticut. But we've
had a lot of thunderstorms that had heavy winds. My plants started to run
about 10 days ago with the side vines gradually popping out. But I did not
bury the main yet.
On two of the plants, one of those windstorms twisted the vines and flipped
it over. The twist on the vine is about a foot or two from the stump. Each one
has started to split. One plant is split worse than the other. I repaired the
vertical splits with Captan and covered with plastic bags that were twist tied
on.
On the one plant that has small splits, I'm considering gently turning the
vine back over. there's about 3-4 feet to turn over with very short side
vines. But this will be a delicate process with some risk to the plant if I'm
not careful. I just want to know from anyone if you think it's worth doing
that or will the plant be fine and just not have tap roots for those few
feet.
  Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Steve in Ct.
