I only terminate the secondaries when I run our of room...so I'll have them
zig-zag to file open areas (maybe I lost a secondary to wind, etc)...the goal
is to have a lot of  "Salad" between the stump and the pumpkin using
secondaries....I think 150 ft of secondary is a number our group has been
using...so if you have 10  secondaries of 15 ft...you can probably pollinate
closer to the stump...if they ar 8 feet long probably need to pollinate out
about 20-25 ft....assuming around 18 secondaires.
I also use the X-tree method and  will pull off a lot of secondaries around
the pumpkin as I don't like to stress the stem on the pumpkin and when the
pumpkin's stem  gets up about 2-3 ft in the air...you don't want the
secondaries pulling it back down...so 0 stress...means  3-4 ft on each of the
pumpkin. I like the stem to be parallel to the ground and not kinked due to
stress.  That is a goal...doesn't always happen.

I keep most of my secondaries. As the pumpkin grows, I usually have to remove
ome secondaries on both sides of the vine to remove some of the stress on the
ain vine and the stem of the pumpkin. Some growers do remove a few
secondaries,
ut I do not unless there are problems.

 I use the Christmas tree method and it works well for me. I would NOT use a
everse Christmas tree. You want your secondaries to be behind the pumpkin and
lose to the stump. I use small scissors to cut the tertiary vines. If I bury
he vines at the same time, the area where the tertiary was cut is usually
overed with soil. The pruning starts as soon as the tertiaries start growing
hich is now. The cut is fairly close to the vine.
