I started my germination process on May 1, and planted 12 plants in the
garden area from May 10 to the 17th. All plants now have 4-8 true leaves.
I used the Wall-of-Water to protect the pumpkins when they were first
planted. They did their job well as the temperature dropped to 27 F one
night and to the low 30s a couple of other nights.
This past week I placed all the pumpkins under what I call tents. I made
wire hoops over the pumpkins and then placed a 6' by 10' row cover over
the top. This really helps keep the wind from blowing the tender plants
and keeps the bugs off. I usually keep the tents over the plants until
they haved vined for several feet. The pumpkins should really grow this
next week as the temperatures are going to be in the upper 70s or low 80s.
There were 23 days in May in which the temperature was below average.
I planted the following pumpkins plants:
- 1061 Zehr -- Started fast but has slowed.
- 603 Baird (2) -- Slowest of all the plants.
- 652 Baird (2) -- Doing well, just behind the 774 plants in size and
vigor.
- 774 Baird (3) -- These plants have shown the most vigor. One plant
germinated in 36 hours and another in 40.
- 884 x 722 (2) -- Black (93) x Holland (92), These plants have also done
well. One germinated in 36 hours and the other in 40.
- 690 Schlutt -- From 1994.
- 836 P95 629 -- From P&P Seeds in 1996. 836 Craven produced 629 pounder
in 1995.
Our garden area is 13 miles from home, so it is difficult to keep track
of the pumpkins on a daily basis.
