Split Stem

I have 4 plants growing and 3 of the 4 have split their stems wide open
right at the base where it enters the ground.  The stems have also turned
quite white in colour. Any idea as to what is causing this?

I am also noticing that some of the leaves are turning a bright yellow on
the edges... what would cause this?
