Quick Edmonton Alberta Update.

Greetings to all.

Well, I finally made the final cut last night and now have one plant left in
my hill. All my eggs are in one basket! Since I don't have a very complete
history of the lineage of my seeds, I made the final choice on two indicators:
1. The vigor and growth rates.
2. The shape of the first baby pumpkin.

Both plants were very close in growth rates. The one I chose had a vine
length of 43" last night compared to 51" on the one I culled. However, the
chosen one was germinated 6 days later than the other one, and set in the
ground 4 days later. The chosen one also had a biggest leaf diameter of 21"
compared to 19.5"

They both put out their first female flower yesterday (monday) as well. The
culled one had an "oblong" shaped baby at it's base, and the chosen one was
round. I've been told that the round ones have more potential, so that is
the one I kept. I would still like to know from some of the other growers
what they have to say about my preoccupation with shape. Does this have any
significance?

Last night, I also spread three yards of (fairly well composted) cattle
manure over the patch and roto-tilled it in. The manure still had a slight
odor and was quite warm in the middle of the pile which sat on my driveway
for a couple of days before I spread it. It formed about a 3" layer on top
before I tilled it in. I hope it wasn't too fresh! I was careful to stay
about 3 feet away from the plant with the new manure. This is about how far
the roots had spread as I determined by carefully digging around the edge.

So now, I sit and wait, and hope for the best.

Regards,
Kurt Frederick
