Steve,
   I wouldn't take all your males and females off quite yet. Usually when
they are the size of a basketball, they are on for good. Sometimes they will
abort at a larger size and then you are left with no new females to
pollinate. The little females on the plant take little away from the big one.
I would set two or three and watch them for a while, to make the ultimate
decision.
