Vine redirection

I have a plant that does not seem to want to fall down and vine
properly. It's going upward. Has anyone ever had this problem? The
logical thing to do seems to be digging up one side of the plant (
opposite of the desired vine direction ) and 'tipping' the plant. Has
anyone ever done this successfully?
