Last year I did not have a viable female on the vine until 20 ft out,
1st week of July. Planted May 1. It was the only female to not wither
before bloom or abort after pollination. It was the only pumpkin I had
the whole season, it goes and there are no pumpkins. It reached 408 in
August and stopped and hung on for dear life until weigh-off time, Oct.
5th. I have two, possibly three plants this year and you can understand
why I would set fruit even this early after last years experience, I
suspect that an early pumpkin will grow longer down here, the heat being
the main factor for the short seasons. We shall see.
