George, could this depend on the watering schedule more than the type of
watering system? Corn, for instance, will withstand a fall storm better
in a dry year than in a year when there has been lots of rain - probably
because the roots have had to go deeper in order to get the moisture
they need, so they are better able to anchor the plant. If somebody
used a drip irrigation system to get a good amount of water down, then
waited till it dried out somewhat before turning it on again, wouldn't
the roots go deeper? As my Dad says, the roots go as deep as they need
 to.

Maybe there is a tendency for the person at the controls to water
differently with different types of systems - more often and less deeply
 with drippers, for instance.

Or is there truly something about the distribution pattern that affects
 the roots?

You could try decreasing the frequency and increasing the duration, but I
didn't find it to help much. Experimented with it for 4 years.
