Port Alberni update

Greetings from Port Alberni
The pumpkins have been in the garden for 1 month and without sounding
overly enthusiastic, all three plants are doing fabulous. The weather here
in the Alberni valley has been perfect with day time temps. around 28 - 29
degrees C. (80 - 85 deg. F.) and night time temps around 15 C (60 F).
The Richart 871 started out with a flat vine. Fortunately it split into
two singles. Yesterday I removed one of the vines and buried the end and
now have a nice main vine 26 inches long.
The Geerts 741.5 is growing at a rapid pace with a vine lenth of 42 inches
and adding 6 - 8 inches every 24 hours. There are several strong secondary
vines ready to start running.
The Larue 1016 has a very stocky 26 inch vine which is not quite laying
down yet. This plant was a little slow to start but has made up for it this
past week and is probably the best overall looking plant at this time.
There is certainly some excellent potential for cross pollination with
these three plants and their genetic backgrounds.
This week I'll have a large fir tree removed (over my wife's objections)
in order to gain a couple of hours of sunshine in one corner of the garden.
Every little bit is going to help at this stage of the game. In the
meantime, it's time to get the boat in the water and go after some of those
sockeye salmon that are starting to arrive in the Alberni Inlet. It's
shaping up to be a fabulous summer.

	Good luck to all,
	                          Jake
