A gopher is not the same as a wood chuck. Here in Mpls. we get the
woodchucks, rabbits, and deer. My brother up north has gophers and
he's gone the .22 route (he has found in "shoot-offs" that women out
shoot the men by a pretty wide margin!). I've tried most of the
commercial pest deterrents (above and beyond fencing, which is
utterly ineffective against a hungry deer). The most efffective and
cheap method that seems to work that I've come across was by Jerry
Baker (it's in his books so I assume I can attribute it to him). It
is kind of gross, but very effective! I will write about it after a
"page down" so the more sensitive readers wont be offended.

Anyway, Jerry Baker says:
As most of us know, animals (predators) 'mark' their territory, and
lesser animals (prey) tend to avoid those areas like the plague.
Well, man is the "ultimate" predator.... He suggests getting a
gallon milk jug, a funnel and use it as a urinal. Keep it capped,
and let it age a while (the longer the better, but I have found that
even a week works well). I have 2 caps, one to seal and the other
with holes to work like a "sprinkler". I go around (after dark,
obviously) and "mark" the perimeter of my territory (read garden).
It really seems to work!!! Granted you need to refresh it every so
often (after rain, etc.), and the smell will remind you of the local
porta potty (during application, not so bad after it dries), but it
is cheap and effective. Plus, it always gives me an excuse to have
a couple of beverages when I'm running "a little low" or the roses
start to get chewed on.....
P.S. No, I don't rub up against trees too.
