Washington update...the boys are out!

Checked on the patch yesterday after work, figured there would be some
maintainence to do after a day of heavy rains and gusty wind. Cloches
weren't blown up as much as I feared. Looked in on the 469 Hester to
make sure the leaves weren't damaged by blowing plastic, saw that it was
fine and turned to get my roll of duct tape and had to do a double take.
There was yellow in there! Two males had opened! I collected them for
pollen storage, we'll see if this works. I fear I wasn't as gentle as I
should have been and much of it stuck to my finger and I couldn't get it
off so I didn't save very much. I just hope I get better with practice.
(I usually do.) The main on the 469 Hester is now about 5' long with
the secondaries getting close to 2 feet. The 916 LaRue has its first
female flower developing at about 10' out on the main vine which is
nearly 11' now and the secondaries are growing out the sides of the
cloche between 4 and 5 feet long. I started burying vines last weekend.
This is 4 days ahead of last year for first bloom. I expect the first
girls will be blooming in another 10 days or so. I had the cloche off
by this time last year but that had more to do with the timing of my
vacation than the development of the plants. I'll leave the cloche's
up for as long as the weather remains cool. Both plants continue to
look very good, no disease, no bugs, no complaints.
