Do you have any females around? any males?
I would say that you don't need to pinch of prune anything -yet. unless
you want to maybe pinch the ends of some of the teritary vines just to
keep the overall plant shape you are shooting for. The idea behind
pinching is that the all the energy of the plant is going into growing
the pumpkin and not some still going into growing the vines. The vine
growth would include new vine lenght and size, new leaves, new male
flowers and new female flowers. So if you have no set fruit then there
is no reason to prune anything- in fact the bigger the plant gets the
better - then there is more energy potenial in your plant to grow the
pumpkins when they do set. as someone stated earlier you can have a
target set date - but in reality you have to go along with what ever
your plant lets yo do. if you have no females yet then you have to wait
and push back your schedule untill they appear and then you set them and
go from there.
hope this helps- good luck !
here is my question for the group:
if you have a #1 plant, and other plant(s) that you are going to use the
males from them to pollenate the #1 females, should you pinch off the
male flowers from the #1 plant ? it seem to me that you should.
the energy that would go into growing them would be transfered to the
rest of the plant as added growth to the vines and leaves before you
have a female and then later into the growth of the pumpkin.
has anyone tried this?
