Beth Rado gave me a Brock 591 to transplant. It grew fast for 4 leaves then
stalled. I went out to spray it to prevent bugs and there was a ladybug on 1
leaf and a small spider with a nicely built web on the underside of another
leaf. I decided that it didn't need to be sprayed yet. The next morning some
critter had shreaded one leaf for its salad and there was a slug sliming the
vine. I sprayed that day. Another day passed and I noticed that the main
vine had collapsed. The flattened vine split open the next day. By June
18th I had decided to rototill and plant another seed. The Brock would be
destroyed when the new plant came up. I had been working 50 to 60 hour weeks
and needed quaility time in the garden. I buried the 1st two feet of the
Brock's vine.
Two vines have formed from the Brock's main vine; both are growing north,
which is a disappointment. They seem to be seeking their momma in Alexandria.
The disappointment comes because I planted them at the northwest corner of the
garden and they are racing across my lawn that was fertilized with weed n feed
last March. I rototilled my garden again to prepare another mound for another
seed. One vine has been routed back into the garden where the Zoo Doo was
deposited.
I went out to water this morning and a rabbit hopped out of my tomatoes. I
threatened the beast as it ran back into the woods. Soon after the rabbit
was gone, I noticed a box turtle in the recently tilled soil. I think I'll
keep the Brock 591.
A heatwave has decended upon the mid atlantic region. We are getting Barb's
sorely missed thundershowers every afternoon. The bass have moved deeper as
the thermocline sets up in the lakes. Time for the Carolina rig! I ordered
some zipper worms from California. I need to set up a trip to take Bill bass
fishin.
Onward to 70,
Patrick O'Veltman
