Spring came early here in south-eastern Ontario and Canadian Champion
Bill Greer is off to an early start with a new location for his patch.
He has 12 plants spread out in an area approximately 135 feet by 85 feet
and is watering from the nearby inland lake. He has pollinated pumpkins
on nearly all of the plants and he also has 2 other plants in the patch
where he grew the 1996 Greer 1006.
I have 3 plants in an area approximately 60 feet by 40 feet and have
pollinated pumpkins on 2 plants. I am over a month ahead of my largest
pumpkin last year which was pollinated on July 20th.
Other growers in the County are now seeing male and female blossoms and
we are making preparations for the 2nd Annual Prince Edward County
Pumpkinfest which will be held on October 25th.
I now write a small column in the local papers entitled FROM THE PUMPKIN
PATCH in which I report on the successes and failures of growers and
give hints on pollinating, burying vines and other techniques.
Our winter seed distribution over the pumpkintalk raised over $120.00
for the Pumpkinfest and was used to sponser our first grower's seminar.
We expect that this years Pumpkinfest will involve more than 50 growers,
mostly from the County.....So long FROM THE PUMPKIN PATCH....JIM IVES
