Glen,
I too thought I was gonna get a flat vine, and still am not sure how far out
of the fire I am, but it sems to be correcting itself. I was getting all of these
leaves, tons of tendrils, etc, and in the past two days, the vine after my last
leaf junction withall the tendrils and leaves seems to be correcting itself on my
Mombert 866 plant. I have 6 inches of new vine since my post two days ago on the
subject, and it seems to be almost correcting itself. My plants have taken off
again, and am getting around 6 inches of vine a day now, but had to put the
cloche ontop of the two plants tonite, as a storm is blowing through the area.
Lots of wind, rain, possible hail, etc. I had to tuck the side leaves into the
cloche to get it to fit, almost completely grown out of the temporary structure.
Busy getting the cukes, beans, and pepper plants into the other garden, along
with trying to keep up with themowing, so the updates have been slow. My pumpkin
time has been spent worrying abuot the vine, watering, and directing the plants
where to grow. The true "Urban Gardener" doesnt have the luxury of alot of space,
so putting two plants into this small space of around 700 sq ft(450 of it
prepared soil, the rest the lawn), we are mandated to direct each plant to use
it's side of the garden. I intend to prove the experts wrong this year, as did
Gary Burke in growing a few large ones in less than 500 sq ft of prepared soil.
The old standard per plant was 1000-1200 sq ft per plant, and we all pretty much
know that is out the window, as hundreds of "Urban Gardeners" are popping up all
over the place. 1999 should be quite interesting.
