I wonder whether the Captan helps any?
I tried to use Captan to reduce mold in Stage I of tissue culture with
total failure. An Example: I went to field and cut lots of thornless
blackberry vines. I washed, used soap, etc as is standard. After the
water was clear, I added captan and did all the cutting to nodes and
cleaning of each node in captan (also had captan in the chlorox
sterilization step. That was 40 hours of working as fast as I could go.
Of the 5,000 nodes planted in sterile liquid medium (containing
captan) in sterile tubes--all 5,000 died of an immediate green mold. By
comparison 50 to 80% of nodes from greenhouse plants are mold free
without captan.
Therefore, I wonder whether Captan does any good against saprophytic
fungi. I have repeat the above other times with no success. Other TCs
have also tried captan with no success in reducing contamination. All
give up using it.
