I don't think professional plant breeders ever use the term "open
pollinated" in conjunction with hand pollination. I think when hand
pollination is used on top of open pollination the facts are explained
to the reader.
I have read that Luther Burbank, my childhood hero, was not always
careful to use virgin flowers. As a child, it never occurred to me to
use virgin flowers.
As others on this list have explained, it is simple to keep male and
female pumpkin flowers free of insect carried pollen by putting a little
tape on the tip of the flower the nite before it opens and then retape
the remainder after hand pollination.
