Burying vines

Hello, Pumpkineers.
I have seen many references to burying vines but I am unsure how to go about
it. Please humor a rookie and look kindly upon my questions.
Should vines be buried before the fruit sets?
At what intervals should the vines be buried? Can you overdo it and lose
fruiting effort to rooting effort?
Should the soil used to bury the vines be of a specific nature?
Should all of the soil receive the same type and amount of fertilizer?
