soil moisture blocks

Does anyone have experience using soil moisture blocks?  I am looking for a
relatively inexpensive sensor I can use to measure moisture in the patch.
These qualify price-wise, but they may be hard to calibrate to the ideal
soil moisture level (which I hear is 66% of "carrying capacity").

I'd like to hear from anyone who has dealt with this problem for pumpkins
or in other settings, such as greenhouses.
