Burying Vines

I keep expecting to get a clear idea on burying vines but so far I don't feel I know how to do this.  What part of the vine do you bury?  When do you bury?  Is it at the leaf or between the leafs.  This is my first year growing a pumpkin and I have gotten a great deal of excellent information off the internet and I sure have learned a great deal from all of you but I still don't get exactly what to do when I bury a vine.  Has anybody got some words of advice for me?  I'd be very appreciative.
