HE: Remember nitrate is the most soluble ion known (all nitrate
compounds are soluble). Therefore, there is a risk that lots of water
will wash the nitrate away especially in sandy soils. I do not know
whether it makes any difference, but I fertilize after watering--that
could cause roots to search mainly in the topsoil.
I was involved in some totally lost fields of sweetpotato in North
Carolina. The market roots were long and only an inch wide and could not
be sold to anyone--not even canneries. The soil was black, peaty sand.
They learned the roots were going deep to get the nitrate applied
earlier. They had been applying nitrate 3 times per season. By applying
several times in smaller amounts, they got fine marketable roots.
