RE: PATCH SAFETY

While on the topic of safety....another thing to know is to keep Benadryl
in the house for unexpected allergies. Many people with allergies to
insects don't know it until they's stung or bitten. Any one with severe
reactions to insects stings (bees or even mosquitoes) may want to get a
prescription Epi-Pen.

I've seen an Epi-Pen at work with a young lady stung by bees who did not
know she was allergic. She still required medical attention but the EMTs
said that without the epi-Pen, she may have gone into anaphaylaxic shock
and may have died.

Bees can have underground hives that can be stepped into and the swarm can
surround you in seconds.

Subject:	PATCH SAFETY - (Was: FW: I thought this was good to know (fwd))

Actually, this is probably good to know for this list....since it can be a
lot of work out in the field and sometimes you are alone, and there is a
lot
of stress sometimes.
Heck I am young and I was exhausted last year! (Well, of course I had to
dig
out 2 tons of clay by hand shovel, but still)!
ALSO, another important thing for everyone to know is carry some aspirin,
(not Tylenol, the real stuff). If you feel any chest pains, take a couple
of
aspirin. This has been found to be able to both prevent heart attacks if
taken right away, and also stop the progress of some attacks. It really can
help. And certainly can't hurt!
ALSO what a lot of people forget is CANCER. How many times have you worked
in
the field with no sun protection? Most people don't take this seriously.
Plus, it ages your skin! Not just if you get a sunburn, you know! And don;t
even say "I;ve been out in the sun already, so I got a tan which protects
me". No, it doesn't. It offers some protection against burns, but not
cancer
or aging of the skin. Plus remember the ozone is way more depleted just in
the past few years. So don't use excuses like "MY DAD WORKED IN THE FIELD
ALL
HIS LIFE AND LIVED UNTIL 100!". Yeah, but you won't. He had a good ozone
layer, we don't. Skin cancer has went up 10 times or more in the last 3-4
YEARS! This is important people! PLEASE take this seriously.
First, ALWAYS wear sunscreen with SPF of 30 or more and MAKE SURE it says
it
protects from both UVA and UVB rays. DON'T rub it in either, this can
reduse
the effectiveness. Just smear it on to cover all exposed skin. Make sure
you
put a layer on EVERY part of exposed skin, including your whole face and
neck, collarbone, arms, legs, and back of hands.
SECOND, wear a HAT with a brim! Or at least a baseball cap (that's what I
wear) with a bill. If it is HOT try to wear everything white and made of
cotton. It will feel like you are in air conditioning compared to if you
wear
dark colors!
Wear white cotton shirts, shorts (or light, light colored long pants).
Please get into the routione of doing this! We are really at risk for this
stuff, and that is sad, since there is NO NEED to be! Skin cancer can
develop
after only ONE sunburn, and even with no sunburn at all, but with only a
few
weeks of excessive sun exposure.
