HE: Peach Tree borer and blackberry borer are clear winged moths, and I
hear on Pumpkins that vine borers are also clear winged moths. The old
control for peach tree borer is to sprinkle para-dichlorobenzene around
the tree and and bank soil up a foot on the tree at a 45 degree slope.
The fumes of P-DCB are heavier than air and the soil causes fumigation
of the lower part of the tree.
It would seem that the same methods would work with vines.
P-DCB is not soluble in water. If one placed some crystals along the
vine and then buried the vine, that might be a control for vineborer.
Moth crystals are napthalene or para-dichlorobenzene. I suspect both
with work, but I would try p-DCB because that is the recommended by
colleges in the old days. I have not checked on whether pDCB is still
the recomended borericide. I have 3 decades of experience using p-DCB to
control moths and some other insects in corn ears in sealed buckets and
had no damage to the germination of the seeds.
