I would suggest you put the pumpkin plants at least 40 ft. apart. You can
still work your well seasoned compost into the ground but I might suggest a
pH test before you put out the plants. In regard to planting seeds in the
compost pile and letting them run across the grass I would say that it might
work even though it is not ideal because you will not be able to bury the
vines. However a lot of home gardeners have had vines on the lawn with good
result so what do you have to lose by trying it. Good luck. Jerry
