Re: Brett--any advice on raising my N, Fe, and Ca levels?

Matt,
Looks like the soil is in pretty good shape. I wouldn't worry about the
7.3 pH. Most fertilizers have a slight acidifying effect so it will drift
down slowly on its own. Add No limestone. CaNO3 will give you both the
calcium and nitrogen. If the report calls for 1.9 pounds N per 1,000 sq feet,
they are talking pure nitrogen. CaNO3 has an N number of 15 as I recall, so
it is 15% N.......so 13 pounds CaNo3= apx 2 lbs pure N. Remember to check all
your soil additives for N and add them all up. The old composted horse manure
probably doesn't have much N left in it. If your iron is on the low side, the
ironite is probably ok......Ironite is not the magic bullet for growing big
pumpkins, but if your soil is low on iron.......why not add it. It will
supply iron. Overdosing the soil with fertilizer is the most common mistake
growers make. Good luck! Oh...by the way, Epsom Salts found in the grocery
store is water soluble and supplies sulfur and Magnesium.
