Re: proven seed

Don,

The best way to acquire seed is thru networking on this list. Another way is to join a few grower organizations and they have a seed lottery every year for ever member. Just got mine from the PGPGA AND PORT ELGIN. Next week OSLGA is sending out theirs. Also grower seminars offer good proven seed for sale. Two years ago they had 4 935's for sale. Most growers don't want money if they have a good proven seed, they will trade, but seldom sell it. Two years ago I had no proven seeds and still managed to grow one over 600 pounds. Thru networking and going to weigh offs and trades and asking for seeds I have come up with some good proven seeds for the upcoming year.I have acquired:
1 723 Bobiers traded for the 825.5 Shymanski,
2 815 Checkons
1 846 Calai  Bought last year at the seminar for 2 dollars
1 914 Wentzel
3 678 Cilibertos
4 991 Hunts
1 697 ciliberto
1 865 Mettler

So don't be discourage and is reltively easy to get seed but very hard to get proven seed. So do what I do and ask all the growers I know for seeds from this years pumpkins and hopefully the following year somebody grows a monster from one of those seeds and you were fortunate enough to acquire them the year before. The 983 Ciliberto looks very good to plant this year. Also look for seeds with backgrounds from:

825.5 shymanski
935 Lloyd
946.5 geerts
567.5 mombert
801 stelts
780 eaton
697 ciliberto
449 marcellus

Also look for seeds that do good in your local growing zone. I'm in Ontario close to the Ny Border and my seed selection will be different then yours. I probably grow the 723 bobier and the 846 calai and the 865 mettler along with the 815 checkon and 914 wentzell for my parents.

Hope this helps and I can offer you some seed from my 788 uow and 700 est along with the 1056,5 dueck,876Papez,672.5Papez,711 Papez. Chris Dueck is my next door neighbor and I started the plant for him and cared for it since this was his first year, I was very emotionally attached to that pumpkin. Let me know if interested and remember grow them for the fun of it and if your in it for the money then you will never be happy. I learned that lesson the hard way.

Subject: proven seed

I was wondering how one may attempt to acquire some proven seed. So far my attempts have been like trying to find arrow heads or buffalo nickles...heee..hee
Seriously, I'd like to grow a 500#er this year. My largest is 303. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, I have no proven seed myself and am willing to pay for them.
Please help.      Don Chambers    Warwood, WV
